IRRIGATION DISTRICT TAX INFORMATION
ON THE WAY TO TREASURE VALLEY RESIDENTS
Irrigation tax notices will be mailed Thursday (Oct. 9) to more than 37,000
Treasure Valley residents who own property inside the boundaries of the Nampa &
Meridian Irrigation District, officials with the District said today.
The tax levy on a property depends on several factors such as the size of the
parcel.  District officials say the 2008 assessment amounts to about $49.00 per acre,
which translates to an approximately levy of $12.75 for a one-quarter-acre residential lot.
Other costs such as for pressurized urban irrigation systems, assessment costs and
drainage and reservoir maintenance charges are then added to the land assessment to
arrive at the final property tax levy.
Residents have the option of paying the assessment in full or in two parts.  The
full or first half payment must be made by December 20.  June 20 is the second-payment
deadline for residents who chose to make two payments.
“People who own property inside the District boundaries need to be on the
lookout for the tax assessment notices because failure to pay the assessment can
ultimately result in tax deed action against the property,” said Daren Coon, NMID
Secretary Treasurer.
Five properties were scheduled to be sold at tax auction by NMID earlier this
year to satisfy taxes that had gone unpaid for three years.   However, the owners of all
five properties paid their outstanding tax assessment and avoided the sale of their
property.
Coon also warned that some residents, especially newcomers to the Treasure
Valley, may think the assessment does not apply to them because their property does not
receive irrigation water.  However, Idaho law states that irrigation system operation and
maintenance levies are to be assessed against all lands in the District, not just those
actually using the water.
The levy amounts are set each year by the District's Board of Directors.
Revenue from the District's hydropower plant at Lucky Peak dam helped reduce the
overall cost of operation and maintenance by almost $7.00 per acre.
Some property owners still owe tax assessments from previous years but may
not be aware of it.  Past due tax assessments are included in this year’s notice.  Also, a
list of lands with back taxes owing will be available in January 2009 on the District’s
Internet web site at www.nmid.org.
The annual tax levies are assessed against lands in the Nampa & Meridian
Irrigation District to pay for operation and maintenance of the canals, laterals, drains and
dams that make up the District's water delivery system.  Levies also are assessed against
individual subdivision parcels using pressurized irrigation systems owned and managed
by the District in 329 residential subdivisions across the valley.
People with questions about their assessment or the Nampa & Meridian
Irrigation District should call the District office.  The telephone number is 466-7861.
The Nampa & Meridian Irrigation District is water storage, conveyance and
distribution system founded in 1904 that supplies irrigation water to some 69,000 acres of
farmland and pressurized irrigation to almost 15,000 parcels of land in Canyon and Ada
Counties.
